Baking Tins

Your choice of utensils to use has a significant impact on your cooking experience. Most of the time, using inappropriate utensil may hinder your work and mess things up. As a beginner in baking, one basic, but most important utensil that you should have in your collection would be the baking tins or baking pans. There are many kinds of baking tins that you may come across during your baking experiences. Most of them look similar but in fact, different kind of tins would suit different cake recipes. I will now introduce the basic baking tins that can be easily purchased in any supermarkets.

Sandwich cake baking tin – Sometimes called the layer pans, sandwich cake baking tins are shallower than the usual cake tins and they are used to make cakes that you sandwich together. An example would be the Victoria sandwich cake.

Deep cake baking tin – This kind of tins are usually used to bake thick and tall cakes such as wedding cakes, Christmas cakes or sponge cakes. The depth of the tin is important in baking cakes because if there is not enough depth, the cake will not rise nicely. Deep cake baking tins usually comes in the diameter of 8 inches and has a loose base for easy removal of cooked cakes.

Springform cake baking tin – Springform cake baking tins are most suitable for baking cheesecakes and mousse cakes. As these cakes are more fragile compared to other cakes, therefore, we cannot turn them upside down to remove them from the tin. These springform cake baking tins comes in expandable and contractible sides which are secured by a spring clamp. The cake can be readily removed once the clamp is released. Springform pans are usually made from aluminum or stainless steel. The pan can be lined with baking sheets, and the bottom wrapped with aluminum foil before baking to prevent seepage.

Muffins baking tin / 6-hole bun tin – The common ones we can get easily are usually heavy aluminum baking tins and tinned-steel baking tins. They come in the standard size of 3 X 1.5 inches deep holes and are used for baking muffin, mini tarts and cupcakes. There are also silicon muffins tins which are known for its non-stick surface.

Bread loaf baking tin – Proper bread making pans are essential to make keep bread moist and sturdy. Most of these tins are non stick and they come in steel, silicone, glass, aluminum or tin. The standard size of a bread load baking tin is 9 X 5 X 2 ¾ inches deep. These loaf baking tins can be used for baking a variety of loaf cakes such as chocolate cakes or fruit cakes.
